How to find and add media to your iTunes library with del.icio.us

Now that iTunes 4.9 supports podcasting and video blogging, you can use the del.icio.us bookmarking service to auto-load music and video files others have bookmarked.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. In iTunes 4.9, choose “Subscribe to podcast” in the Advanced menu.
  2. Craft a del.icio.us RSS URL which gets you the media you want. Some examples:
    • All MP3’s:
      http://del.icio.us/rss/tag/system:filetype:mp3
    • All videos:
      http://del.icio.us/rss/tag/system:media:video
    • Just mashup MP3’s:
      http://del.icio.us/rss/tag/system:filetype:mp3+mashups
    • Just screencast videos:
      http://del.icio.us/rss/tag/system:media:video+screencast
    • Just popular video: (Thanks, James!)
      http://del.icio.us/rss/popular/system:media:video
      Or popular music:
      http://del.icio.us/rss/popular/system:media:music
  3. Let iTunes grab the feed and download the first item. Hit the “Get” button to download anything else that looks interesting.
  4. Double-click on the downloaded item to play. For videos, choose “Show Artwork” from the Edit menu to reveal the screen panel.
  5. To keep a song or video that you like, drag and drop into the Library.
And that’s that!
