Semi-Untraceable internet use on a public PC

Yesterday we had posted Stealth Surfer USB Flash Drive informing you about a preprogramed usb flash drive which can help you retain your annonymity aand privacy. My friend Rathish wrote up this article to explain a DIY Stealth Surfer Flash Drive and has kindly permitted us to publish it at BotHack.

Requirements:

1) Brain
2) USB pen drive, one about 64 mb
3) A computer at home
4) Firefox installation (most current at time of writing is1.0.7)

Additional Recomendations:

1) Shoot for a USB pen drive of about 256mb
2) Some knowledge of Batch would be nice

Intro:

I was sitting on my ass with nothing to do (homework doesn't count) and I was checking out BotHack in my room (I find lots of stuff in here). Now I scan through the posts and I see an article on a USB pen drive company, they explained how you could use their "special" ones to use the internet on a computer and leave no trace of yourself. I thought, wow thats nice. But it dawned on me after about 10 minutes of mind numbing thinking exactly how they did it.

Part I:

1) Download Firefox on your own PC
2) Now put your pen drive in
3) Format it
4) Create a Folder called "FireFox"
5) Install Firefox on it *normally I install Firefox in under a minute, it takes longer though through USB so be patient*

Part II:

If you get this far, then you most likely have a brain and you're almost done. Yay. Now you have to know where your browser saves information it gathers.

If I remember correctly.

Now before we go on, create a folder "Downloads" on your pen drive. Next, start up firefox from your pen drive and do following:

Tools > Options > Downloads

Now when you get to Downloads options change it from "Save all files to this Folder" (desktop by default) to

X:\downloads

Where X is your Pen Drive's assigned letter.

Done with that? Good.

Now back to the empasis of part two on making it so you can surf the net on someone else's PC hopefully leaving little or no trace. Go to C:\WINDOWS\temp on your computer (assuming you use Windows) and copy the temp file to your pen drive.

Go to the public computer, stick your pen drive in their and copy C:\WINDOWS\temp from their computer after renaming it as something like "real". Then put your -temp- in it's place. surf the net. When your done, put "real" back where it was and rename it "temp". When it asks you do you want to overwrite your own Temp, say yes.

And there you have it, now I'm going to hope this all works and try it out for myself.

Final Thoughts:

Remember how I recommended you know a little about Batch. Well it could be helpful. See, on your drive X place 2 new folders, TempReal and TempFake. Now create a simple batch command rutine to copy their temp to TempReal on your drive and then copy your fake one from TempFake onto the computer. And a second Batch command rutine to do the opposite so they get back the same Temp folder.

I'm not 100% sure you can copy files with Batch although using START command you can run a program. In case you can't then just use a good programming language like C++, either way it beats doing it manually and fucking up due to human error.
